Andrew E. Shuma III, Commander, U.S. Navy
Commander Andy Shuma was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1986 with Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and English.
His first tour was aboard USS HARLAN COUNTY (LST 1196) in which he served as the Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer, Navigation Division Officer, Combat Information Center Officer, and Administrative Officer. While aboard HARLAN COUNTY he completed a West African Training Cruise, UNITAS Deployment to South America, and deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm.
In 1993, Lieutenant Shuma reported to PCU CHIEF (MCM 14) as Officer in Charge, and assumed duties as Chief Engineer upon the ship’s commissioning in November 1994. While aboard CHIEF he completed all phases of the commissioning cycle including Acceptance Trials, Shake-down Cruise, Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trials, Home Port shift, and the ship’s initial Operational Propulsion Plant Examination.
In 1996 Lieutenant Shuma reported to USS FREDERICK (LST 1184) as Chief Engineer. While on FREDERICK he participated in the Cooperation Afloat for Readiness and Training deployment (CARAT), and several other Marine Corps exercises throughout the Middle Pacific.
In 1998, Lieutenant Commander Shuma reported as Executive Assistant/Flag Secretary to Commander, Logistics Force Western Pacific (CTF 73) in Singapore. CTF 73 controls all USN and MSC operational logistics for the middle and western Pacific as well as organizing and executing the annual CARAT series of multi-national exercises.
Returning to the U.S., he assumed duties as Executive Officer in USS BRIDGE (AOE 10). While in BRIDGE he conducted a comprehensive maintenance availability and a complete Inter-deployment Training Cycle in support of the JOHN C. STENNIS Battle Group, successfully preparing for an accelerated Deployment to the Arabian Sea in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Commander Shuma reported to the Surface Warfare Officer’s School (SWOS) in January 2002. While at SWOS he served as Engineering Instructor within the Command-at-Sea Department training Prospective Commanding Officers and Executive Officers, then progressed on to SWOS’ Lead for Navigation and Seamanship, Executive Officer of SWOSCOLCOM, and finally Director of Division Officer Training.
In August, 2005, CDR Shuma transferred to the Naval War College. He graduated in June, 2006 with a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
CDR Shuma reported to Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Unit, University of Rochester, in July, 2006 and assumed duties as Executive Officer.
